Orientation and Mobility (O&M) training gives individuals who are blind or have low vision the tools to move safely and independently through their environments. At Adaptive Technology Services, our O&M services begin with a comprehensive assessment and continue with one-on-one, customized training that supports real-world independence.

Whether someone is learning to use a white cane for the first time, adjusting to a new route, or returning to travel after a vision change, we meet each client where they are. O&M is more than learning how to cross the street or take a bus. It is about building confidence, accessing opportunity, and taking control of how and where to move through life.

Orientation and Mobility Assessment

Our O&M assessment evaluates a client’s current mobility skills, safety awareness, and ability to travel independently across diverse environments. Its goal is to identify strengths and determine the most effective strategies, tools, and instruction to support safe travel in personal, educational, or professional settings. The final report includes detailed recommendations and training goals tailored to the client’s lifestyle, preferences, and objectives.

O&M Assessments Include:

✓ Interview to understand daily routines, goals, and previous experience with mobility tools;

✓ Review of vision-related reports and overall functional impact on travel

✓ Functional assessment of sensory awareness, spatial orientation, and body alignment

✓ Cane assessment to determine appropriate technique, type, and readiness

✓ Analysis of travel environments such as home layout, neighborhood, campus, or worksite

✓ Evaluation of glare, lighting, and environmental factors that affect mobility

✓ Identification of current barriers to independent travel and possible safety concerns

Orientation and Mobility Training

Following the assessment, training is tailored to help each client build safe, efficient travel skills in environments that matter most to them. Whether commuting, navigating a campus, or using public transit, instruction is practical and paced to each individual’s comfort level. Our holistic approach fosters confidence, problem-solving, and real-time decision-making—teaching transferable skills that promote independence, access, and participation. Training is a partnership focused on setting goals, building momentum, and traveling with confidence and safety.
